Terms of Service

Last updated: October 8, 2026

These terms apply when you use Scriveno, a service that converts handwritten math, physics, chemistry, and plain text notes into LaTeX, PDF, DOCX, and Markdown, and turns the result into spoken audio ("voice-over"). By using Scriveno, you agree to them.

Who you're contracting with

Scriveno is currently operated by an individual, Saroj Adhikari, and is not a registered company. There is no incorporated legal entity behind Scriveno at this time.

What isn't informal is the infrastructure: every server Scriveno runs on, including the machine that reads your handwriting, is physically located in Copenhagen, Denmark, inside the EU. We don't rent anonymous compute from an offshore provider or route recognition through a third-party API - it's hardware we own and operate ourselves, in one country, under Danish and EU law. You can reach us at Fiskerhusene 29, 2620 Albertslund, Denmark, or by email below.

Governing law and disputes: These Terms and any non-contractual obligations arising from them are governed by Danish law. If you are a consumer habitually resident in another country, this choice of law does not deprive you of mandatory consumer protections that apply in your country of residence. A dispute may be brought before a court with jurisdiction under applicable law. Nothing in this clause limits a consumer’s right to bring proceedings before a court available under mandatory consumer-protection law.

The service

Scriveno uses AI - a handwriting/formula recognition model we host ourselves, on our own servers in Copenhagen, Denmark - to recognize handwritten equations, formulas, and diagrams and convert them into digital documents. AI recognition isn't perfect - always review the output against your original notes before relying on it, especially for graded or published work. We work to keep accuracy high but don't guarantee error-free transcription.

Scriveno can also turn a converted result into spoken audio ("voice-over") in 23 languages, using a software-generated voice from a catalog of voices - never a recording of a real person. This runs on the same self-hosted infrastructure described above and is metered separately from page conversion; see Plans and billing below. A voice-over reads the transcription aloud, so it inherits any recognition error and can mispronounce unusual notation - treat it as a listening aid, not a substitute for checking the typeset document.

Accounts

You can convert a limited number of pages without an account. Creating an account gets you a recurring page allowance and saved conversion history. You're responsible for keeping your password (or OAuth login) secure and for activity on your account. In some cases (e.g. support issues, trials, or promotional access) we may manually grant an account a temporary page allowance at our discretion, separate from and on top of its normal plan - this always has a fixed size and an expiry date, shown in your account, and never requires payment.

Adults only

Scriveno is for adults. You must be at least 18 years old to use it, with or without an account. When you create an account, you confirm that you are at least 18, and we record when you did.

Plans and billing

  • Free: a limited number of pages per month, at no cost, no payment method required.

  • Pro: a paid monthly subscription at the price shown on the Pricing page for a higher monthly page allowance and additional features, billed through PayPal.

  • Developer: free to join, pay-as-you-go - pages are billed against a prepaid credit balance you top up yourself, so you're never charged more than you've already paid in. No recurring fee.

  • Pro subscriptions renew automatically each billing period until cancelled. Cancel any time - from your account, or with Cancel contracts here at the bottom of every page, where you don't need to sign in. We confirm a cancellation by email straight away, with what you sent and when. You keep Pro access through the end of the period you already paid for, then your account reverts to Free.

  • Before you pay: Before we send you to PayPal for a Pro subscription, Developer API credit or voice-over points, we show you your right of withdrawal and where to use it. We also ask you to tick a box agreeing that Scriveno starts providing what you buy right away, before the 14-day withdrawal period ends, and that if you withdraw, you must pay for what you have already used. You can't continue to PayPal without ticking it. We record that you ticked it, with the time, the product, your language and the version of the wording shown, and you can ask us for a copy.

  • Statutory withdrawal rights: If you are a consumer in the EU or UK and enter a paid agreement with Scriveno online, you generally have a statutory right to withdraw within 14 days from the day the agreement is made, subject to any exception permitted by mandatory law. You do not need to give a reason. To withdraw, use Withdraw from a contract at the bottom of every page, where you don't need to sign in, and we confirm your withdrawal by email straight away. You can also email support@scriveno.com or send the model withdrawal form below - a clear statement that you are withdrawing is enough. We will make any refund due without undue delay and no later than 14 days after receiving your notice, using the payment method you used unless you expressly agree otherwise. If you asked us to begin a service during the withdrawal period, an amount permitted by law for the service provided up to withdrawal may be deducted.

  • Starting service during the withdrawal period: If you are an EU or UK consumer and ask Scriveno to begin a paid service during the 14-day withdrawal period, we will require your express request on a durable medium and send you confirmation of it. If you then withdraw before the service is fully performed, we may charge only the proportionate amount permitted by applicable law for the service supplied before we receive your notice. The withdrawal right ends after a paid service has been fully performed only if, before performance began, you expressly requested that the service begin during the withdrawal period, acknowledged that you would lose the right once the service was fully performed, and received confirmation of your request and acknowledgment on a durable medium. For paid digital content supplied electronically, the withdrawal right is lost only if, before supply begins, you expressly consent to immediate supply, acknowledge that you will lose the right, and receive confirmation of that consent and acknowledgment on a durable medium. Use of Scriveno alone does not waive a statutory withdrawal right.

  • Pro cancellations and refunds: You may cancel a Pro subscription at any time, from your account or with Cancel contracts here. Cancellation stops the next renewal, and access continues until the end of the period already paid for. You may also cancel for good cause with immediate effect where the law allows it: choose "Extraordinary" on the same page and tell us why, and we review it and reply by email. After any statutory withdrawal period, unused time is not refunded unless applicable law requires otherwise.

  • Developer API credit: You may request a refund of unspent Developer API credit through your account. Approved refunds are returned through PayPal to the original payment method. This policy does not limit any mandatory consumer withdrawal or refund rights.

  • Voice-over points: Free monthly points have no cash value except where mandatory law provides otherwise. If you are an EU or UK consumer, you may exercise any statutory withdrawal right that applies to purchased points within the applicable period. We will refund amounts due under that right. Points already spent are not categorically excluded from a refund; applicable law and the withdrawal conditions above determine any amount due. Outside a statutory withdrawal period, refund requests for purchased points will be considered case by case.

  • Billing records outlive your account. Billing and accounting records may remain after account closure only for the period described in the Privacy Policy. We retain the payment and accounting records required by Danish bookkeeping law for five years from the end of the financial year to which each record relates, or longer only where another applicable law requires it. An invoice may show the name, email address, or company details provided when it was issued. These records are separate from your closed sign-in account. Deleting your account does not itself entitle you to a refund.

  • Model withdrawal form

Complete and return this form only if you wish to withdraw.

To: Scriveno, Fiskerhusene 29, 2620 Albertslund, Denmark; support@scriveno.com

I/we give notice that I/we withdraw from my/our contract for the following service(s):

    Ordered on:

    Consumer name:

    Consumer address:

    Date:

Signature of consumer(s) (only if this form is notified on paper):

Pricing changes

We know unexpected price changes are frustrating, so we commit to the following:

  • No sudden or retroactive changes. A price change never applies mid-billing-cycle and never changes what you've already been charged.

  • Advance notice. If we raise standard pricing, we'll notify existing subscribers at least 60 days before it takes effect on their account - in line with common practice among subscription services (most give 30-60 days), we lean toward the longer end of that range. Price changes only ever apply going forward, from your next renewal after the notice period, never before it.

  • Promotional/sale pricing is locked in for its full stated duration. If you subscribe during a promotional sale, you keep that sale price for the length of time advertised at checkout, regardless of any price changes we make afterward - standard pricing (or a later, different sale) only applies once your locked-in period ends. This is enforced automatically at the payment level, not something we adjust by hand.

  • We change prices only for genuine changes to the cost or scope of operating Scriveno, such as infrastructure, electricity, maintenance, payment processing, or taxes. While recognition and narration are self-hosted, we do not base price changes on third-party AI-provider prices. Any change remains subject to the advance notice and timing rules above.

Acceptable use

Don't use Scriveno to:

  • Upload content you don't have the right to (copyrighted material you don't own, someone else's private notes, etc.)

  • Try to circumvent rate limits, plan restrictions, or account requirements - including by closing and re-creating accounts to reset a free allowance

  • Attack, scrape, or overload the service outside of the documented developer API

  • Upload anything illegal or that violates someone else's rights

We can suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms.

Closing your account

You can close your account yourself at any time from your profile page. It takes effect immediately: you can't sign in again, any developer API keys stop working, and your uploaded files and conversion results are deleted straight away rather than waiting out the usual 7-day retention window. A closed account can't be reopened, though the email address and username are released so you're free to sign up again later. We email you to confirm the closure.

If you have an active Pro subscription, closing your account cancels it with PayPal as part of the same step, so you won't be charged again. After any statutory withdrawal period, the unused part of the current billing period is not refunded, except where applicable law requires a refund or price reduction. If you withdraw during a statutory period, any refund and any amount due for service provided will be handled under the withdrawal rules in “Plans and billing”. If PayPal can't be reached at that moment, your account isn't closed, so a subscription is never left billing an account you can no longer sign in to - just try again shortly.

For up to 30 days after account closure, we retain an allowance record under keyed pseudonymous identifiers derived from your email address and Google sign-in. This lets us apply remaining page and narration-point usage if you register again during that period. Scriveno can match those identifiers if you return, so the record is pseudonymous personal data, not anonymous data. We delete it automatically within 30 days after closure, or sooner once its remaining usage has been applied to a new account.

The active account record is deleted when the account closes, whether or not you previously paid. Payment and accounting records, the 30-day allowance record, and any approved correction example may remain only for the periods described in the Privacy Policy.

Your content

You retain ownership of the material you upload. As between you and Scriveno, you retain any rights the law gives you in results generated for you. To the extent Scriveno holds transferable rights in a result, Scriveno assigns those rights to you.

You grant Scriveno a limited, non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free permission to host, copy, process, transmit, and transform your uploaded material only as needed to provide the conversion, preview, download, history, and narration features you request, and to operate and secure the service. This permission lasts only as long as needed for those purposes and is subject to the retention periods in the Privacy Policy. It does not allow Scriveno to publish your material, use it for advertising, train or fine-tune a model on it, or reuse it for other users.

A correction may be reviewed or used as a reference example in other users’ recognition requests only if you separately consent to that use as described in the Privacy Policy. Submitting a correction, or Scriveno approving it, does not by itself grant permission for that reuse.

Developer API

If you use the developer API with your own key, you're bound by these same terms plus any rate limits shown in your account. Keep your API key confidential - you're responsible for requests made with it.

AI accuracy and service limits

Scriveno uses automated recognition and generated speech. A transcription or narration may contain errors, omit material, or misread notation, and the service may sometimes be unavailable. You should check any result against your original notes before relying on it.

Mandatory consumer rights

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits any consumer rights, remedies, warranties, or liability that applicable law does not allow us to exclude or limit. Where mandatory consumer law applies, your statutory rights concerning the supply and conformity of digital content or digital services remain in force, including any right to have the service brought into conformity, receive a price reduction, or terminate the contract where the law provides that remedy.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Scriveno is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential loss arising from use of the service. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Scriveno’s total liability for a claim is limited to the amount you paid Scriveno in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim.

These limits do not apply to liability or consumer rights and remedies that applicable law does not allow us to exclude or limit.

Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms when reasonably necessary because of changes to Scriveno, applicable law, security requirements, or the way the service operates. We will state the updated date at the top of this page.

For a material change that adversely affects a current paid subscription, we will notify you by email at least 30 days before it takes effect, explain the change and its effective date, and let you cancel before that date without a cancellation fee. We will refund any prepaid amount where applicable law requires it. Changes will not apply retroactively to rights or obligations that arose before the effective date. If applicable law requires your express agreement to a change, we will ask for that agreement.
